The National Palace occupies the entire east side of the Zócalo. It is the seat of the executive branch of the Mexican federal government and covers an area of approximately 40,000 square meters. It has been a World Heritage Site since 1987.
Construction began in 1522. It was intended to be Hernán Cortés' second private residence and was built over part of the existing palace of Huey Tlatoani, Moctezuma Xocoyotzin. This palace was known as the New Houses of Moctezuma. After the fall of Tenochtitlán, the Spanish crown declared it the seat of the viceroys of New Spain. It served as such for approximately 300 years.
A major fire destroyed much of the complex in 1692, and the palace was rebuilt in the following decades. With Mexico's independence in 1821, it became the seat of the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of government and remained so despite numerous regime changes in the 19th century between supporters of the republic and monarchists or conservatives. Between 1822 and 1884, it was also the private residence of all rulers, with the exception of Maximilian, who resided in Chapultepec Castle from 1864 to 1867. After that, the presidential office was located in the National Palace until 1968, and from 2012 onward, it partially resumed this function as the presidential office. In 2019, it became the official residence of the president and his office.
Throughout all these years, it has served as a permanent venue for official, protocol, and social events of the presidency of the republic. Heads of state and foreign governments were received here, and letters or credentials from the diplomatic corps were presented.
Every year on September 15th, the official Grito de Dolores celebrations take place here, and the following day, Mexican Independence Day is celebrated.
Over the past 500 years of its history, the building has undergone numerous reconstructions and expansions. The National Palace features neoclassical, baroque, and neocolonial elements. Its current appearance is the result of extensive work in the second decade of the 20th century, when a third level was added.
Diego Rivera's murals represent a valuable historical and artistic heritage and are magnificent examples of art that can be viewed inside.
