Cholula, formerly called the Rome of Anahuac
Cholula, formerly called the Rome of Anahuac, is full of talavera, sacred pyramids and polychrome domes. The Popocatepetl volcano is always present in its beautiful view.
The Plaza de la Concordia is surrounded by the San Gabriel Monastery, which was built in 1549 by the Franciscan Order in the temple dedicated to the god Quetzalcóatl. The facade is simple and the interior of the main altar, with its vault and the paintings of San Francisco de Asís, attracts attention. The Franciscan Library is located in the pilgrims' portal and has a collection of more than 24,000 volumes from the 16th to 19th centuries. It has works on subjects of theology, literature, math, science and history. Very close to the library is the Guerrero portal with 46 semicircular arches, which is considered to be the longest in all of Mexico.
The royal chapel or the naturals are reminiscent of the Muslim mosques with their 49-domed roof. On one side is the Baroque style chapel of the Third Order with oil paintings and Solomonic columns from the 17th and 17th centuries. XVIII.
The parish of San Pedro Cholula was built in the 17th century and its tower is the tallest in Cholula. It has a churrigueresque style dome that preserves eight stemmed windows. Inside is a painting by Cristóbal de Villalpando depicting the Archangel Michael. The sanctuary of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios is at the top of the city and was built on top of the Great Pyramid or Tlachihualtépetl in 1549. It has a platform 450 meters per side and 107 meters high. It has a site museum that houses replicas of the murals found in the area, a model of the pyramid, skeletal remains, and pieces of ceramic.
The House of the Knight of the Eagle was named this way because of the bas-relief at the main entrance. The ground floor dates from the 16th century and the upper floor from the 17th century. There is currently the Cholula City Museum with six rooms that display more than 2,300 pre-Hispanic pieces. In the Museum of Talavera Alarca you can observe the development of the Talavera from the 16th century to the present day. ➢ The pyramid with a church on top
The Great Pyramid of Cholula is 60 meters high and 400 meters on each side.
It is one of the largest pyramid cellars in the world and is made up of overlapping structures.
The site museum, a tunnel within the 280 meter high pyramid and two ceremonial inner courtyards can be visited.
At their peak, the Franciscans built the Santuario de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios.
➢ Guerrero Portal
Overlooking the city's square, you will find the typical traditional portals of colonial towns that were built here in 1573. There are 46 arches in total, which is the longest of its kind in the country at 170 meters in length and under which you can walk or take a break during your stay in Cholula. And here you can find all kinds of shops, especially those dealing with tourism, restaurants, hotels and handicrafts.
➢ San Gabriel Monastery and the Royal Chapel
One of the oldest temples in the city of Cholula was founded before 1529 on the spot where it was in the temple dedicated to Quetzalcoatl. The magnificent building is located on Place de la Concorde and is Gothic and Plateresque. It was carried out entirely by indigenous hands. To the left is a chapel in the country's unique Moorish style known as the Capilla Real.

As you can imagine from the name, this quaint place offers typical Mexican dishes in an equally colorful setting. Enmoladas, roast beef, cemitas, pipián, sloops and much more in the Mexican line can be found on the menu.
