A few little tips on what to do in Mexico City

The capital of Mexico lies in a high valley and was built over the ruins of the Aztec metropolis Tenochtitlan. As one of the largest cities in the world, it is the political, social and cultural center of the country with numerous universities, museums and monuments. The city has a lot to offer, e.g. in the center the Presidential Palace, the Zocalo, the Cathedral and the Templo Mayor. In addition to preserved buildings from the colonial era, you will find modern architecture. Mexico City is also home to the country's most important historical museum, the Museo Nacional de Antropologia. In addition, the Casa Azul - the Frida Kahlo Museum - in the artist district of Coyoacán is very important. Together with the historic center of the city, the district of Xochimilco is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The floating gardens of the Aztec city of Tenochtitlán used to be in Xochimilco. Today you can take a boat trip in a famous "Trajinera" through the canal labyrinth. About 45 kilometers northeast of Mexico City lies Teotihuacán, the famous city of the gods. Teotihuacán is one of the largest excavated ancient Indian cities in Central America, best known for its huge Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon

La Malinche Trail

In the morning you go on an interesting natural history hike on the La Malinche Trail. In the afternoon city tour in the colonial pearl of Puebla.

La Malinche-Park??

Established in 1938, the park covers an impressive 177 square miles on the Puebla-Tlaxcala border. It is a protected, wild space home to 69 species of birds, 11 species of reptiles and 27 species of mammals including coyotes and mountain lions. Most visitors come to Malinche National Park with one goal: to climb the imposing Malinche Volcano, the sixth highest mountain in Mexico. The volcano rises over 14,500 feet and is named after a highly controversial woman in Mexican history.

Malinche was a Nahua woman who was sold as a slave to Hernan Cortes. She interpreted for him and eventually played a key role in the Spanish conquest, eventually even carrying Cortes' firstborn son.

Whether she was a victim or a traitor (I believe the former), she was a powerful woman and Malinche Volcano is an apt namesake.

So a visit to Malinche National Park is a workout, history lesson and nature escape all rolled into one. This travel guide has everything you need to know to add it to your Mexico itinerary!

Secret tip underground tunnels??

Although underground tunnels have long been a mere urban legend, the Puebla City Council has recently confirmed that a network of underground pathways exists beneath the city. It is a really big complex, the total length of which could be up to 10 kilometers. On average, the tunnels are about 7 m high and about 3 m wide. They are believed to be as old as the city itself. That means they date from the first half of the 16th century.

Puebla is one of the largest and oldest Mexican cities. In 1987 it was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List for its rich architectural heritage.

Experts believe that the tunnels originally served as a secret connection between sacral buildings, especially between the largest monasteries (St. Dominic, St. Francis Xavier, St. Augustine).

Oaxaca is also a culinary highlight on a trip through Mexico. The different types of mole, a thick sauce consisting of chiles and a multitude of ingredients, are particularly well known. When it comes to drinks, the Mezcal, a liquor made from the agave plant, stands out. There is no better way to get to know a country, region or place than through food. The kitchen is an expression of cultural identity. In gastronomy, the art of the culinary, Oaxaca holds a top position in Mexico. The Cocina Oaxaqueña inspires with its variety and richness of ingredients. Whoever visits Oaxaca must taste its delicious food and typical drinks. The most famous specialty is mole, a sauce made from chilies and spices. Other classics include tlayudas (large, crispy tortillas with different toppings), chiles rellenos (chiles stuffed with a variety of ingredients), tamales (made from corn dough with variable ingredients), quesillo (fibrous cheese) and chapulines (roasted grasshoppers). When it comes to drinks, mezcal, the local liquor made from the agave plant, reigns supreme. Or how about a cup of hot rinking chocolate, just like the indigenous people used to enjoy?

In the morning you visit the mighty Monte Alban: Welcome to the world of the Zapotec and Mixtec! Then you explore the center of Oaxaca, visit the magnificent church of Santo Domingo, the Regional Museum and stroll through romantic streets and over colorful markets.

Do you know Mezcal?

Mezcal

Among the alcoholic beverages in Oaxaca, mezcal stands out. The word mezcal comes from the Náhuatl term mexcalmetl, meaning "agave plant." The schnapps is based on the same vegetable raw material as tequila. In contrast to tequila, however, this does not have to be the high-quality Agave Azul and there are no restrictions on the cultivation area. Certain brands have the infamous insect larva/worm swimming at the bottom of the bottle.

You can taste the drink in a typical Mezcaleria. Or you can visit a mezcal distillery not far from Oaxaca city, on the route to Mitla. Here you can find out how agave schnapps is made and how it tastes

San Cristóbal de las Casas - San Juan Chamula

San Juan Chamula is a must for anyone coming to or living in San Cristóbal de las Casas. The municipal seat is located 10 km from San Cristóbal de las Casas. This community is known for the Chamulas (its inhabitants), who are part of the Tzozil ethnic group, who still uphold the rituals of the Catholic religion in a idiosyncratic way mixed with Mayan rituals.

Which makes for a very interesting visit as it is one of the few places where you can observe these rituals in first person.

What to visit in San Juan Chamula There are three obligatory places to visit in the municipal administration.

The cemetery On the one hand there is the cemetery , which is located at the entrance of the city and is very peculiar compared to other cemeteries in the area since, as we have already mentioned, they have very specific rituals.

the marketplace The second interesting place is the Market Square, especially on Sundays. A large market where you can find a wide variety of local handicrafts and clothing. As well as the typical drink of the community, the posh, a kind of liquor.

The Temple of San Juan And finally and at the same time the most important place is the Temple of San Juan. Entrance to the temple costs 20 pesos. Inside the temple you will see a magical place where two cultures mix in a very special way.

It is very important to know that "the Chamulas" do not like to take pictures of themselves or their rituals. Therefore, if permission has not been granted, it is better to leave your cameras in your bag.

The buildings that can be seen today, in a magnificent jungle setting, date from the Classic period, ie from the years 400 to 700 AD. The Palace and the Temple of the Inscriptions stand out.

The finds found at this site confirm that the Maya had a complex social and religious organization and admirable architectural, astronomical and mathematical skills.

In addition, the Palenque hieroglyphs detail the city's military history, the exploits of its rulers, its calendar and rituals, and provide invaluable information about Mayan culture.

The city benefited from its position on the central trade route between the Gulf Coast and the Caribbean coast and was therefore richly decorated, which can still be seen today..

Elite city adjacent to Becán

Within the architectural area of the Bec River, the Chicanná archaeological site stands out for the great beauty of its Structure II, which is richly decorated with a huge mask of Itzamná, the Creator God, in which you can see remains of Chicanná stucco that in Spanish means "The House of the Serpent's Mouth" (chi-boca, can-serpiente, ná-casa), possibly alluding to the enormous mask on the central facade of Structure II. The earliest period of occupation of the site dates back to the Late Preclassic period (300 BC to 250 AD), and its peak dates from the Late Classic period (550-700 AD), when the site was a small center dependent on Becán that served as the regional capital.

Given the elegance and decorative richness of its buildings, Chicanná has been considered by some researchers as an elite center of the Río Bec region. Like Becán, between the Late and Terminal Classic periods, it must have participated in the commercial route that crossed the peninsula from the Gulf of Mexico to the South Coast, today Quintana Roo. Chicanná remained occupied until the Terminal Classic and Postclassic periods (800-1100 AD). "The house of the serpent's mouth", as it has been called, is considered an elite city adjacent to Becán.
