Ranch Cowboy School goes "beyond boot camp!"

Ranch Activities

Ranch Cowboy School

Our Ranch Cowboy School goes "beyond boot camp!" The G Bar M Ranch Working Cowboy School gives participants the opportunity to learn about working cowboy traditions while riding and working with some of the best cowboys in the West. Understanding animal instincts and working with (rather than against) nature encompasses every aspect of the G Bar M ranch cowboy school, whether in the arena or out on the range.

The essence of the program We're talking about a philosophy that focuses on the interrelationship between the cowboy and his horse and the cattle he works. Ranch horsemanship enhances the partnership the cowboy has with his horse and the resulting teamwork leads to effective performance of ranch functions. Good husbandry is defined as safe and effective livestock husbandry practices that result in minimizing stress on livestock, horse and rider. These are skills that are used daily on the ranch.

The traditional working cowboy is always striving to improve himself and his horse. Ranch work on the scale we are talking about can be tiring for both horse and rider - it is important to learn how to minimize their mental and physical stress. Everything is connected, whether it's positioning the horse, opening a gate on horseback, covering the ground in a long trot, or roping a calf... it's all about the partnership and learning of ranch cowboying Techniques to improve communication with your horse.

The true ranch cowboy—the guy

or girl who gets it right—is the one who stirs up the least dust at work

If you've got the Hollywood image of whip and spur and flying dust, then you might be disappointed. The true ranch cowboy—the guy or girl who gets it right—is the one who stirs up the least dust at work.

Program levels and requirements

The ranch tailors each program to the needs and desires of each student. Just as there is no set schedule for Colt training, the pace is adjusted and personalized to reflect each student's learning style, experience and ability. After learning the principles in a smaller group, there is an opportunity for practical application that allows the student to advance to a higher level.

Safety comes first in everything we do. While we give students ample opportunity to develop and grow, we ensure that the base of skills is solid before moving on to the next step. Students considering Ranch Cowboy School should be able to ride unaided, be comfortable on horseback, and be able to trot over rough terrain for extended periods of time.

BYOH - Bring your own horse or ride one of ours

Matching participants with a solid ranch horse is one of the keys to the success of the cowboy school. Ranch horses work with a purpose, becoming solid, dependable cow-sense mounts, useful in a pen and in the open country. However, it is also possible to bring your own horse. Students find the ranch to be the perfect place to ride their own horse (or mule), deepening partnership while challenging rider and horse.

The Instructors There's an old adage… “When the student is ready, the teacher appears,” and for those lucky enough to find their way to the Montana ranch, the teachers are seasoned working cowboys.

Leading trainers at the Working Ranch Cowboy School are cowboys with a special affinity for working with horses. You are there for the horses, not to develop yourself. Skilled hands, skilled riders, skilled trainers, they are highly respected in the ranching world.

Working Ranch Cowboy School details and dates

The school is held during specific weeks in midsummer to give participants the best balance of cattle work, afternoon riding in the open pasture and morning work in the arena.

Sunday is the arrival/departure day Beginning in the arena each morning of the week, the focus is a personalized program of ranch horsemanship, arena cow work and cowboy ethics with an emphasis on understanding body control and the benefits of groundwork.
At the trail ride each afternoon, participants work on their horsemanship in the natural environment, which helps the horse perform better on a cow, on the trail, or in the arena. "Rubber meets the road" at the Almabtrieb on Saturday, where riders put their new skills into practice. Call us! If you want to learn the traditional ways, if you are looking for a more intensive training with the aim of getting hands-on work while the real work gets done, then you are a candidate for Working Ranch Cowboy School. If you want a less structured cattle working and horseback riding experience, check out Ranch Vacations. Either way, we want you to join us.
