The Tamayo Museum (Museo Tamayo) was founded in 1981 by Ruffino Tamayo, when the Mexican artist donated his own works, in addition to an extensive collection of international contemporary art, to present the art of the 20th century to the public. Designed by Mexican architects Teodoro González de León and Abraham Zabludovsky, the building is made of reinforced concrete and white marble stone. You would assume that such heavy materials would feel like an intrusion in the middle of Chapultepec Park, where the museum is located. The low design and natural hues allow the building to hide in and among the trees. Inside, glass walls and light wood floors make the gallery spaces feel contemporary, open and spacious.

When is the best time for a visit?

Tours are offered Tuesday through Sunday at 12:30 pm. On the last Wednesday of the month there is also a night tour at 6:30 pm.

How were the facilities in the practical tip?

The museum is not big, so it is easy to move around. There are some benches, mainly outside the exhibition halls, where you can rest. The museum is fully accessible and can be borrowed elevators, ramps and wheelchairs.

Gift shop: mandatory, inspiring - or skip it?

The café, which is actually more of a posh restaurant, is located just outside the museum. The outdoor seating area overlooking the park is perfect for a coffee or cocktail break after art.
