History and adventure in spectacular Tulum
In Quintana Roo, visit Tulum, two hours south of Cancun. The city is known for its well-preserved ruins of a Mayan fortress city from the 13th century. From the parking lot you can reach the entrance of the walled area by bike or a tractor. Enter the site with its small, rolling hills and climb a staircase to the impressive ruins of El Castillo (the castle). The building sits on a picturesque cliff overlooking the Caribbean Sea and offers sweeping views of the surrounding area. Originally the complex served as a lighthouse and helped ships navigate safely around the nearby reef. Learn about the history of the site and its importance as a major port city visited by traders from all over Mexico and Central America. Imagine Tulum in its heyday and visit other important structures including the Temple of the Frescoes and the Temple of the Descending God. Marvel at murals, stone deities, carved doors, and other features of Mayan architecture. Follow a path north of the castle that takes you to a pristine white sand beach. Take a swim in the turquoise sea or stroll along the coast to examine various indentations in the limestone cliffs. Drive you then to Xel-Ha, a natural, maritime theme park with a multifaceted underwater world, adventure activities and delicious food and drink. Stimulate your appetite by paddling down a river, jumping off cliffs, snorkeling, soaring through the air on the zipline, or taking a dip in a cenote. Then fortify yourself with a rich Mexican buffet and a drink from the bar. Finally, you can relax in one of the hammocks in the garden to review your exciting day before returning to the hotel.

After breakfast, make your way to the stately haciendas in the Santa Barbara area. Learn all about the history of the pretty buildings. The production of the hardy agave plant, also known as 'green gold'. Both sweeteners such as miel de agave (agave honey) and tequila are made from it. Then discover the region's many cenotes on an enchanting ride in a horse-drawn carriage. Local communities firmly believe that cenotes are the mythological passages to the underworld and the refuge of the Mayan gods in the Yucatán. The quiet cenotes are sinkholes that have emerged over time through the erosion of limestone bedrock, making the groundwater below accessible. Pamper yourself with a lap or two in the beautiful crystal clear water before settling in for lunch at a local restaurant. Then return to your hotel.
